On October 22nd, 2021, the University of Economics and Law (VNU-HCM) held the Opening Ceremony of the academic year 2021-2022 in an online form because of unexpected impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic . The online ceremony was also broadcast live on the university's official Facebook page.
The ceremony was honored to have the attendance of the representatives of VNUHCM’s member universities, departments and units, the strategic enterprise and spartners of the University as well as the UEL’s lecturers, Staff and students.
In recent times, the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic has taken place extremely fierceful. It is believed that more than 21,000 people including compatriots, soldiers, medical staff and frontline forces have heroically sacrificed. At the ceremony, the Organizing Committee spent a minute's silence in order to memorialize the compatriots who had passed away from the battle during the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the occasion of the Opening Ceremony of the academic year 2021-2022, Assoc. Dr. Vu Quan Hai - Chancellor of Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City gave a congratulatory speech to the staff, employees and students of the University: “I would like to congratulate the new students who have been admitted to the University of Economics and Law, member of VNU-HCM. This is a very honored achievement of the students, an important milestone, the beginning of the journey of discovering and conquering new knowledge with many challenges and opportunities. During the following years, UEL's leaders, teachers, and students have made great efforts to overcome many challenges and difficulties due to the serious impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, successfully implementing the annual plan and ready to enter the new academic year 2021-2022.”
At the same time, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan especially gave the keyword "resilient" to the new K21 students of UEL, along with the message: “Facing the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to give you the keyword Resilience. It is the resilience and perseverance to overcome challenges, difficulties, achieve success and happiness in the future. I hope you all keep this spirit to triumph over the pandemic soon. I look forward to seeing you again in the Urban Area ofVNU-HCM.”

In recent years, UEL is a member of VNU-HCM and has been transforming to become an autonomous university with research-orientation. This helps us affirm our position and prestige in the fields of economics, business and law; continue to promote the values of unity, excellence and leading on the journey of knowledge. At the ceremony, UEL also honors new students who have made great efforts on their studies as well as those with prominent achievements in academics, cultural and artistics in the formal university enrollment in 2021.
Giving opening remarks at the ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tien Dung - Rector of the University also congratulated 2,294 new students of the 21st course who were admitted to UEL from many enrollment approaches. They have passed the exams with very high quality and impressive input status. The great efforts of these students have pleasingly brought pround results for themselves, their families and the university also

They will be accompanied and facilitated not only by the responsibility of the University, the concern of their families, but also by the companionship of organizations, individuals and businesses to support and sponsor the valedictorian titles, excellent students overcoming many difficulties in life to continue studying" - said the Rector.

To encourage and motivate the students, every year, the Vietnam National University Development Fund Ho Chi Minh City has campaigned with students to sponsor the top valedictorian scholarships up to 30 million VND for each. Those scholarships are funded by the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam Vietcombank-Ho Chi Minh and Nutifood Nutrition Food Joint Stock Company. The amount of money from those scholarships will be transferred to the students’ account through the VNU-Vietcombank co-branded card. This year, two freshmen receive the entrance top valedictorian scholarship.
At the same time, with social responsibilities, joining with other universities to support future generations, over the past 20 years many organizations, businesses and individuals have accompanied UEL in many activities in the aim for the development of the university. Continuing the success of cooperation in the past years, the academic year 2021 - 2022 University of Economics and Law has received grants from organizations and businesses with a total value up to 1,996,000,000VND.
